Been there, done this! They are not. It's an urban legend. Besides, Elephants aren't afraid of humans, lions, or anything. Even lion prides move out of the way when the big animals comes.
Snopes comments that "In fact, given the large size and relatively poor eyesight of elephants, they don't necessarily notice the occasional mouse scurrying around them all that often."
Although it's possible that if by some fluke the mouse scurrying noise was magnified an elephant might be a little spooked and try to figure out whether it's dangerous or not.

This is a baseless myth .People think an elephant is afraid that a mouse could run up the inside of his trunk and get in his brain.Zookeepers report mice are very common around the elephants feeding area in the hay and straw and elephants show no sign of fear ever.

It's suspected that its because the elephants are afraid the mice will run up their trunks causing their flow of oxygen to stop.

No..they are not afraid of them. They probably do get spooked every now and then. When the mouse darts out of the brush near them.
