Me and my house mates are students and we live next door to a supposedly empty house however we believe that there are squatters living there. Noise is heard in the house in the middle of the night including bangs and people running up and down stairs, as well as seeing someone in the top bedroom window one time. I would like to know if anything can be done about it as it is quite scary or is it just something we have to put up with?

You cant actually do anything apart from complain to the owner of the property. If it is squatters and they havent broken in to get there - the owner will then have to serve a court notice on them, take them to court and get an eviction order - all this takes a couple of months at least though. How about asking the people to shut up - try putting a note through the door. if needs be xx

Some states do have squatters rights, though, it usually means that after a period of time, the property being used by someone other than the owner, becomes the squatters property. If you're sure the people don't belong at the house, you could find out who owns the house (the town office would have record of this) and then give them a call. I'm sure if the owner knew, they would call the cops and take care of it for you.

The only real success stories Ive heard of people getting rid of squatters have involved the owner of the premises paying large men with baseball bats to go and have a 'word' with them. Im afraid if youre students theyre likely to be in that house a lot longer than youll be in yours even if eviction proceedings were started tomorrow.

yes next time it happens ring police say people breaking in next door and are in the house now ! police arrive let them deal with it
