I tried to start my car this morning and it wouldnt go. It is getting plenty of juice from the battery, I checked. Anyways I was getting it towed and the guy towing it said that it was the timing belt/chain? It only has 54,000 miles on it, could it have already broken?? And how much is this going to cost?? I am a little miffed,

I don't see the timing belt going out that soon, but anything is possible due to defects in materials used to make belts. What one must look at is; what was you doing when it started doing what its doing? Was it running and stopped, or were you driving it and it quit running? Many other things can cause this problem. If it ran fine when you turned it off, and then it wouldn't start again, I wouldn't be so quick to rule the timing belt is bad. A good mechanic can run some quick tests on it, and tell what it needs. As far as a tow truck operator goes, I wouldn't take too much stock in what he says, because he doesn't know just by guessing what the problem is. It may be the belt, but if I was a betting man, I would vote for something else. Maybe the ignition module, a blown fuse, fuel pump, or lots of other things. Without the proper tests being done, NO one can determine the cause of it not starting. Have someone who is qualified to take a look at it and give you their opinion.
Glad I could help. Good Luck!!!

Nothing last forever buddy! A belt is just a piece of rubber with teeth and it will wear out faster than a chain. It will most likely cost a couple hundered bucks. The timing belt in my car needs to be replaced about every 60 to 75 thousand miles.

If the timing belt has gone, it won't crank - the valves interfere with the piston's movement and the engine wouldn't turn at all. If it is the timing belt, it's that it's skipped a tooth so you're very lucky there and it'll cost bugger all to sort out (new belt+tensioner). More likely to be a fuel or spark issue though.

you can tell if the chain is broken, just take off the oil cap and have someone crank the engine,if the rockers are working then the chain isnt broken, but it can slip.a chain should last longer then that, but if its got a belt, then it could have broken.

was it turning over (cranking) or was it clicking ??? those are 2 different problems................. well it could be fuel related or yes a timing belt could of busted. most timing belts only go 60,000 miles, some can go above that but read your owners manual. a timing chain wouldnt of busted this soon.
