In 1981, Reagan cut welfare, and ther social spending benefits by about 20%...and the nation went into recession, and crime went up.

So if welfare was cut, crime would go up.....because it's happened before.

Of course crime will increase. When ever a person doesn't have what they need to survive morality gets pushed to the side until those needs are met. Just think about it. It's wrong to steal but is it as wrong to steal food if your children are starving?

If peoples benefits are cut and they are unqualified for jobs that will earn enough to survive they will turn to crime to make up that financial need. The government needs to work on ways to drop the welfare rolls not cut benefits. If less people need welfare then I feel crime will decrease.

I thought long and hard. The programs have been abused, We will always take care of the ones who really need the help, but we have created an enabling system and a dependency on this by those who could get out of it. The key is education, and again, not an enabling education system. No, I think in the long run, there would be less crime, but the vicious cycle needs to be broken of welfare babies have welfare babies.

Yes. Without a doubt. Not everyone is cut out to work and more and more of what needs to be done is being done by machines. I think we should encourgage humans to study and get along with each other. I think the police forces should be modified with people teaching each other how to be friendly to each other. But I dont think welfare should be cut. If you mean medicaid too, that would really be devastating. The kind hearts of people who have been given more are nice, but we always need that extra backing of a government that belongs to all of us. It is about human rights and freedom and the exercise of such.

Welfare should be eliminated and legal gun ownership encouraged. President LB Johnson's War on Poverty drove up crime and out of wedlock births. See if you can find Thomas Sowell's book, Race and Culture, A World View. He does the research and cites his references.

Decide for yourself.

I don't understand why people continue to believe that just ripping away welfare will be the panacea to all of the United States problems. Yes, crime will raise, because those legitimately on welfare will do what they need to do to feed themselves and their families. And which welfare, to be clear, will be the one or ones ripped away? Corporate, federal, SSI, what?

Any person law-abiding or otherwise, if they are faced with hopelessness, despair, they will turn to crime whether it is robbing the local liqour store, stealing a gallon of milk, being lured into substance abuse, or suicide as a means to escape from their situation. Survival by any means is a basic human instinct. My answer is YES!

No.

Being poor does not mean people turn to crime, nor does it turn good people into criminals. Besides, there are no plans to cut welfare anyway.

By your premise (implied) is that the government and taxpayer must bribe people to be honest through welfare.

giving them less time to use drugs
the will be forced to keep regular hours
they will think more clearly

What if we took any savings and paid them to police officers instead?
