I need to buy for some of my mates but don't know what to buy.

What do they like? Think about their favorite colors, hobbies, things that they really like but don't buy themselves often. Do they like a specific drink or snack? Have they mentioned something they'd like to try (like a new perfume or cologne)?
If it's cold where you live, you could always get them a scarf in a color that would compliment their eyes, or a pair of leather gloves to keep them warm while commuting to work or school.
Gift cards are great if you don't know the recipient well or are at a total loss for what to get them, but if you can base your gift off of something they already like, it will seem more from the heart and will be appreciated :)

Jewelry is always a good choice for women. As for men, check out the electronics section, or perhaps the hardware section.
Also, books, candles....
Another way to get ideas is to go to Yahoo, click Shopping, then click Gifts for Him, or Gifts for Her. This always helps me out.

i agree with the first answer, gift card would be the best way to go that way they can get whatever they want and will be less stress on you trying to pick something out for them

how about "clever gadgets", the kind that make you ask questions, tear it apart and try to figure out what makes it work. I am thinking about anything from perpetuum mobile to all sorts of funny/clever machineries. it'll surely keep them entertained! :) good luck with your search....
