It's a system used on printers. A dot matrix printer or impact matrix printer refers to a type of computer printer with a print head that runs back and forth on the page and prints by impact, striking an ink-soaked cloth ribbon against the paper, much like a typewriter. Unlike a typewriter or daisy wheel printer, letters are drawn out of a dot matrix, and thus, varied fonts and arbitrary graphics can be produced. Because the printing involves mechanical pressure, these printers can create carbon copies and carbonless copies.
dot.matrix is also a project of four musicians from vienna / austria / europe.

Step into the "way back" machine, Sherman, and I will show you...
Back in the prehistoric days of computers, printers worked by having a series of wires in them that came out and hit a ribbon to put ink onto the paper. Each letter of the alphabet had a pattern (or matrix) that was made up of dots. The wires would use those dot matrixes to form the letters. They are also known as impact printer, because the printing is done by the impact of the wire heads on the ribbon.
Today, most printer working by either spraying ink on the paper (inkjet printers) or using toner that is fused to the paper.
The dot matrix printer is rarely used other in some commercial settings where they still use non-carbon reproduction paper to produce multiple copies of a form. Inkjet and toner will not work because they do not produce any pressure on the page to make the multiple copies. They still need the impact of the old dot matrix head hitting the ribbon to active the mutli-copy forms.

i replaced into going to objective and describe this myself yet that's a much greater appropriate description ... A dot matrix printer' or impression matrix printer refers to a style of laptop printer with a print head that runs returned and forth on the internet site and prints by making use of impression, astounding an ink-soaked textile ribbon against the paper, very comparable to a typewriter. in comparison to a typewriter or daisy wheel printer, letters are drawn out of a dot matrix, and subsequently, multiple fonts and arbitrary pix could be produced. because of the fact the printing is composed of mechanical tension, those printers can create carbon copies and carbonless copies. each and each dot is produced by making use of a tiny metallic rod, additionally called a "cord" or "pin", that's pushed forward by making use of the potential of a tiny electromagnet or solenoid, the two without delay or by way of small levers (pawls). dealing with the ribbon and the paper is a small handbook plate (frequently created from a guy made jewel which includes sapphire or ruby [a million]) pierced with holes to function publications for the pins. The moving portion of the printer is named the print head, and while working the printer as a regularly occurring textual content textile gadget frequently prints one line of textual content textile at a time. maximum dot matrix printers have a unmarried vertical line of dot-making kit on their print heads; others have some interleaved rows with the intention to advance dot density

It's a type of printer from way back in the day! Made loads of noise and most used the paper with the tear away sides. Cool printers.
Or it could be a smaller version of Neo's plight to save the world.....
