Seems to me they have tried to create a presidency that is not accountable to the American people and has no checks and balances. Thankfully they did lose the control of the House and Senate, but this administration does not support or respect the Constitution. Lets see where Congressional oversight leads us.
Can the hearings, investigations, and subpeonas be very far away?

Edward F: Bush is not the government. He is an elected official answerable to the American people.
Now that we have congressional oversight back for the first time in 6 years, we will see if he has committed no crimes.

I would not hold my breath. While it is true that impeachment can be brought with a simple majority in the House which the Democrats have, a 2/3 majority is required to remove a president from office, which they don't have. Republicans will not vote to remove the president. You can count on this, there will be investigations, there will be subpoenas and the end there will be convictions and resignations of lower officials. This is common in these type of affairs as few people can stand up to full Congressional scrutiny in an open ended witch hunt. In the end the investigations will be costly to the American taxpayers and they will be fruitless as far as the intended and desired ends. In short an absolute waste of time and money. You also need to remember that the American public has consistently stated in polls that they are against this type of activity and prefer that the Democrats concentrate on legislation rather than revenge. They should be very careful because this process has the potential to blow up in their faces and cost them dearly in the next election. Mr. Bush cannot stand for office again and Mr. Cheney is not going to run for president.

planksheer: Nixon committed numerous actions designed to obstruct justice. Some of these actions were very public including the firing of the Special Prosecutor and court actions to protect the tapes. In the end Mr. Nixon resigned because Republicans were not going to support. He would have been impeached and he would have been removed from office. The public was also very against Mr. Nixon. To date no evidence has been presented against Mr. Bush that could even come close to a parallel with Nixon. That could change of course during investigations, but the Nixon comparison is weak at best. You would be better served to look at the result of Iran/Contra as this is closer to what might actually happen.

There are not enough votes in the Senate to remove them. Once the new Congress starts in January, the Dems have enough votes to impeach in the House (simple majority), but then they would stand trial in the Senate, where it will take a 2/3 majority to convict and remove from office. They don't have enough votes for that. It would take at least 16 Repubs to vote in favor of conviction, and that would never happen.

Yes, do a whole bunch of hearings and subpoenas and see Republicans get elected in 2008 in Congress!

The check and balance is ELECTIONS! That's why the Republicans lost the Congress and would have lost the Presidency had it been up.

If the Dems think 2 years of hearings and getting nothing done will work for the country, they will have wasted their majority.

We can!

Grassroots impeachment petitions can be brought before the House of Representatives. Indeed, some states have already taken votes to that end. I am not yet aware of the final results of those votes, but it is possible that within the next year we may see some mass movement toward the removal of both Bush and Cheney.

Unlike Clinton, Bush has committed no crimes. Just because the Democrats don't like him, doesn't mean they can remove a sitting President.
You are so willing to open a Pandora's box that you're not seeing the big picture. Your opinion is not the only one and the majority sees a big difference between not agreeing with policy and overthrowing the govt..

You can't because you are not an American Citizen. The system is in place to remove a standing president. It has never happened. You would first have to have proof of a crime. Conducting a police action is not a crime. No Crime , No Case , No removal, sorry go back to school

well, they have not broken the law.
also, even with a political coup d'etat by the dems., they do not have the votes to convict in the senate. the dems only have 49 members of the seante, as do the reps. the other 2 are indies, who will split on a party line vote. the senate is tied, and cheney casts the vote to convict bush. bush would therefore not be convicted.

Sounds like you listen to to many liberal talk shows. The info. you are receiving is not totally correct. get your info. from all different sources before you pass judgment. If John Kerry were president today our country would have most likely suffered more attacks like that of 9.11.06.
Do you think Bin Laden planned on hiding in a cave for the rest of his life after Sept.11 06. NO, he thought he would be a hero, living in luxury. surrounded be beautiful women feeding him grapes and have all the equipment he needed to plan another attack easily accessible to him. Instead he has to hide for his life, and struggle to communicate with his fellow terrorist. If Kerry were in office it's a good bet we would have been attacked again. The terrorist did not expect us to take a stand this time because we have not in the past.
