hi i am 38 & 1/2 weeks pregnant and am having contractions around 6 - 10 minutes apart with a duration ranging from 1 - 2 mins long. at first they were relatively painless and i could just see and feel my stomache tightning but now im getting stabbing pains. for the last two days i had period type cramps that were very mild but noticeable. i havent lost my mucas plug and no bleeding but an increase in discharge. I dont want to go and wake my mum up if its not but she wants to be there with me through my labour as i am only 18. Whats your opinion, is it real and should i wake her?

I was told when I was pregnant that if I'm having what I believe are labor contractions to get into a WARM (not hot) bath. If the pains are Braxton Hicks the warm water will alleviate them. If the pain does not go away, chances are they are real. However, I would still wake up your mom just in case. Good luck sweetie!

Contractions 6-10 minutes apart could either be Braxton Hicks or early labor. If they aren't coming at regular intervals chances are they are Braxton Hicks. If it's early labor the contractions should get progressively closer together and stronger. In general you won't be admitted to the hospital until you are at least 4 cm dilated and in active labor. Call your ob/gyn and let him/her know that you think you may be in early labor and they will tell you to either come in to be examined or when to go to the hospital. Good luck.

So why the hell are you sitting at the computer?

Why the thumbs down? She is obviously having labor contractions yet she sits on the computer for two hours waiting for someone on Yahoo to tell her what to do. This is ridiculous!

As for BH contractions the answer is no. These go away with rest...ie sitting at the computer. also they do not cause a feeling of pressure in the vagina, the baby dropping into the birth canal causes this.

Sounds real to me. Better to be safe then sorry. Well unless your going for an unassisted home birth. In which case don't wake her and risk delivering this baby by yourself. She wont be mad if you wake her and it isn't real. TRUST ME ... she will be thrilled either way. Good luck Hun

You would not be able to type if you were in active labor. You may be in early labor but if it's not all that painful I would wait a bit.

Please wake your mum, it sounds as though you are in labour!!

You should go to the hospital and they can check how dilated you are and put you on the monitor that can tell if you are having contractions or not.....

Good luck!!!!!
