I have this fascinating idea of drawing a photo with a pencil. I have tried to outline the countours of the photo and then print those countours and draw them on another piece of paper on top of the printed one. Is there an easier way to do this?

Try tracing the photo using tracing paper, then flip your paper over and cover the back of it with very soft graphite pencil. Now you have "carbon paper". Flip the drawing back over, tape it down on one edge on top of your final drawing surface so it won't move, and re-trace it, checking from time to time that you haven't missed any lines.

Have fun!

Pick up one of those cheap art projectors (about $20) and place your photo in it and project it onto the paper you will be using to the size you want. Trace the basic shapes of the photo onto the paper. Remove the photo and use it for reference to finish rendering the drawing. Easy Shmeezy. This method works GREAT for pencil portraits, you get the proportions down fast and accurate and have more time for creativity.

not sure if u know this technique but...u can build a grid of squares on top of the photo then put a grid of the same proportions on a sheet of blank paper...draw according to the grid...helps to get everything in the right place....what your talking about sounds more like tracing....on that note u could even use an over head projector

go to your layers palette and click the arrow on the upper right with your background layer selected. the arrow will drop a menu down - go to duplicate layer. this gives you a disposable layer you can play with...without undoing each time. under your filters menu there are lots of things you can play with to change your media look. you probably want either graphic pen or charcoal or colored pencils. have fun

what my art teacher has us do is..... make a graph of squares(clear). i don't know how big the picture is, u have 2 figure that out. make it that it fits your picture. tape it down so it won't move. that way u can concentrate on each little section of the picture. the con is.... u have 2 make sure it isn't off a little in 1 square or your whole picture is off.
