How many people really understand the EU and its implications to us in the UK?

For instance, UK Governments blame the EU for lots of laws... but what they do not tell you is that any EU law has to be agreed by ALL of the EU members.. the UK included... That The Commission and Commissioners have no voting powers... That the MEP's don't make the laws... they are part of a Debating Forum and can only make recommendations to change laws... that have to be agreed by ALL the Member states via their govts... so on and so forth
That both Conservatives and Labour have agreed to the laws and contribution we make to the EU...
That your guaranteed 20 paid holidays per year is an EU law NOT previously a UK Law. That the Minimum wage is EU Law.. previously disposed of in the UK by a certain political party and leading to sweatshop employment. That much of your Health & Safety Law and COSHH regulations to protect you when working is derived from the EU ? Please... no xenophobic answers

Luggerbug... unfortunately the UK Gold reserves were sold years ago. The world no longer uses gold reserves as a way of measuring a country's value. It uses it trading situation with the rest of the world and its internal trading... hence why the mighty dollar is now losing value against the pound and the euro... because the USof A is presently heading slowly into a a poor trading situation... and their gold reserves are not helping them.

Karen S... You make interesting comments, like handing over the responsibility of our armed forces... Had we have been under EU 'Rule' as you suggest, then our armed forces would not be in Iraq. As for your economics... an Adam Smith viewpoint? Why do you think that the USA became so powerful economically? After all, its a federation of independent countries (States), that is diverse in its cultures (French/Spanish/Dutch/English and the rest) but has a common language, currency, Governance and trading partners... themselves. Ted Heath lied? In that case, so did the majority of all sides of the House. Most MP's wanted membership and, it was and still is a free trade area for all members. Why do you think the Japanese have businesses here? In order to use the free trade mechanisms... otherwise, they would have to pay high excise duties to the respective govts when they tried to bring cars/tvs etc into the EU. The 'English' National Anthem, it is English, not Welsh or Scottish.

Very, very few people in Britain seem to have a basic understanding of the EU, hence this widespread knee-jerk reactionism against the EU, and the tendency to blame the EU for anything and everything. Like most things, much of the responsibility for this lies squarely with the right-wing tabloids.

When the EU starts getting more powerful and the UK (as an independent economy) starts to suffer joining the euro will be our greatest god send - then people will start to change their views.

People are not educated on the EU - you need to learn about it your self.

Sure there are many problems that the EU causes, like the CAP and free labour markets, both harm individual states and will reduce out trade opportunities abroad.

It is good to see some people understand that the UK will need to become part of the EU to survive as an economically successful state.

A Federal Europe will be one of the biggest and the most advance 'states' in the world - the only thing is people need to more involvement in the production of laws and policies.

in the so observed as "Schengen" worldwide places in the ecu you are able to bypass borders without exhibiting your passport - no controls. although rules require distant places human beings to hold proper identity. A utilising license isn't sufficient in a distant places u . s . a . because it commonly does no longer practice your nationality. If human beings could carry an identity of their homestead u . s . a . (ecu) relies upon on the rustic. E.g. as an Austrian here in Austria i'm no longer required to hold an identity each and all the time yet police can carry me until eventually my identy has been shown. interior of Austria a driving force's license will do completely for an Austrian - for each man or woman else no longer. Your passport exhibits which you have entered the ecu legally - the two because of the fact it includes the visa for the ecu or it exhibits your nationality and through that which you do no longer desire any visa for the ecu.

British governance is being handed over, and its 'control' is increasingly in the hands of ****unelected bureaucrats*** within the EU. It is up to the people of the day, to say no before Britian is swallowed up by a pan-European Constitution, which will mean being "stripped of our remaining independence; losing control of our foreign policy and armed forces; the HANDING OVER OF OUR LEGAL SYSTEM AND LAW ENFORCEMENT TO THE EU... ***the handing over of our remaining currency and gold reserves to the European Central Bank;*** (check your facts?) and the total regulation of British domestic and international trade, by the European Union
The European Economic Community (EEC) began as a free-trade agreement in 1972.( The British people were lied to by Edward Heath!!!) Today's European Union is well on its way to becoming a federal superstate, complete with one currency, one legal system, one military, one police force - even its own national anthem.!!!! Not for me thanks!!!

Sorry ! I am an unreconstructed euro xenophobic.

We don't have to be a member of this club.

So much for your pro Euro stuff.
I suppose that you will be pleased when our Gold Reserves are shipped to Euroland, if, and God forbid, we join the "Euro".
