Once upon a time, a notebook meant a very very small laptop, that usually lacked a CD drive, serial ports, etc. to reduce the size. Today, the size of laptops has reached the point where they are smaller then the old notebooks. So the terms have become interchangable. There is no difference between them. (Like what is the difference between a car and an automobile).

They're one and the same. But some people do differentiate them regarding their size. They say that anything smaller than one with a 15.4" screen is a notebook while others are laptops. But seriously they mean one and the same thing- PORTABILITY!!!
