Mam, here is one of the reasons.
In the duo the engine performace suffers. i.e. the enigne performace will go down to some extent. Now if the automatic gearbox is fitted then it would be difficult to run the engine in the same gear as it is tuned to run with Petrol Only.
So the first reason is that the automatic gearbox needs to be tuned for both the fuels, and that is a bit on the costlier side.
Other thing is that the efficiency will go down even further.
So because of these two reasons Maruti avoided the automatic for the Duo.
Not because of the power shortage or some thing else.
Many years back maruti intorduced 800 with automatic gearbox. The engine of 800 is not powerful. One may argue that it has to pull less weight, but the correct technical term is that Wagon R has better power to weight ratio. So it must be able to perform with automatic in Duo also. But fot the above reasons maruti has not launched.
So in Wagon R Power is not in shortage for a small car. But cost reasons dictate something else.
One more thing. If you are planning to buy a Wagon R, please wait. A new Maruti Zen named Estilo is going to hit the roads on Dec 5 as per latest information.
It is based on the same Wagon R/Alto platform, but people say it looks more contemporary and cute at the same time.
So please wait if you are not having any specific limitaitons like loan duration. But i dont know that wheather its avalibale with LPG option or Automatic gearbox. But it utlilizes the same same engine as Wagon R and efficiency is said to be better.
But any way i dont think the new Zen will have duo versoin with automatic transmission.
I wanted to buy the new Zen, but because of the loan duration problem, i went in for Wagon R duo. Its a great option.
happy and safe driving
regards,

(A) Automatic gears, on an average deliver much less efficiencies than manual gear shifting. It is another issue that many drivers (especially Indian taxi drivers) do not know which gear to be in at what speed, which both hurts the efficiency and spoils the mechanicals.
Auto Transmissions are comparitively expensive. But this is a catch22. Maruti would make them cheap if there was demand for it. Right now they would have to import it, and unless there was a latent demand for it (like maybe if the Hyundai Automatics became popular), they are unlikely to introduce it in the Indian market.
(B) Hmm... If it does not at all come in an automatic version, why would it come in a dual fuel version? Auto gear shifting happens based on engine RPM and vehicle speed. The dynamics of these will change with the type of fuel used for the same engine. So the same auto transmission is unlikely to work for both fuels.

Dear mam,
Wagon r is a small segment car which is low priced and is for middle class people. Automatic gear boxes are very much expensive so it will end up in increase of cost and sales would come down.
By the way wagon r is not a powerfull car .
Byee.
