When you're a black woman? I know this one girl who is from an all white suburb, very pretty, first generation black woman and she says that she doesn't think racism really exists anymore. Mind you, this is before the Michael Richards comment that was so direct, so I don't know if she would agree. I at first felt bad because I grew up exactly the same with the same social identities, but have had many accounts of racism...blacks and whites...I'm not bitter or anything and I'm very privileged in many aspects...but I admit that people have been rude to me solely for skin color alone.

But do you think that she doesn't "see" racism or do you think some people actually go through without ever having to suffer?

I don't think you can avoid racism because racism is a symptom of humanity. We are always trying to figure out how to make ourselves better in our own minds and racism is an easy out. I do however think that the only cure for it is the browning of the world. I think as our races and cultures continue to mix these feeling will start to go away. We have made tremendous progress over where we were 30 years ago, that is for sure. It is hard for us to even conceive of a society where blacks ride at the back of the bus or drink from a different fountain.

Racism goes different directions and as a white man I have been the victim of the same by black people. It always hurts. I live in the South now where it is visible. In a sense it is almost better because you know where it is and you can avoid it. There will always be nasty people in the world and it is up to people like us to look beyond them and find the commonality that we share. Skin color really means nothing, it is what is in our hearts and minds that matters.

Avoid it yes. To get past it , yes. To say that it does not exist anymore, absolutely positively, NO!

Even if no one admits it, racism is a two way street and is self perpetuating. One person will make a remark to another. That person gets offended and dislikes the one who made the remark. Then both are ticked because of what each has said to each other.
Then friends are told about it from both people. They get half of the story, half of the second hand gossip and all of the hatred.
Those people act outraged and again tell their friends and it snowballs into a riot.

Everyone is guilty of it racism at one time or another. It will NEVER go away. It will always be there over your shoulder as long as the PC police are there. You cant say this word or that word because you may offend someone. I think that a word is an expression of thought and shouldnt be censored. Actions are what should be brought under control.

Stereotypes tend to be based in fact. Your adventure has been great undesirable, yet attempt to bear in mind that the chinese language people who stay on your section do no longer and can't probably represent each and each chinese language individual in the international. it quite is difficulty-free for somebody else to assert however the fact which you're asking this question says which you're making some style of an attempt to stay open and not leaping onto the bandwagon of hating human beings for motives that no you will particularly help. in case you reside in a ordinarily chinese language community and can't pass away there is no longer very lots you're able to do, yet something you're able to do to ward off them without being racist is all you're able to do at this factor. that's a complicated question to respond to, even even though it quite is spectacular to me which you look attempting to stay civil even with your frustration and confusion.

you know, people have been rude to me because of a haircut, clothing, the kind of car i drive... people are rude. it's just a fact of life. what makes anyone think it's possible to end all rude behavior based on skin tone? what makes people think this is such a huge problem, more so than the fact that people are rude to each other for all kinds of reasons? when it comes to race, the law has pretty much abolished discrimination. what do you want to do about what certain individual people think or feel?

The people your friend grew up with weren't racist, therefore treated her with respect, so her world view is that racism doesn't exist. Take her to rural South Carolina and she will see racism is alive and well.

I don't know whether that could be avoided because some people are very narrow minded. The best thing is to ignore those people and pretend they don't exist.

yes ofcourse! you can most defenetly avoid it if you think of the other person positively and try not to find any difference btwn you and the other person. think of them as people who are not out to hurt you though you ain't sure.
