Joe Cool, Comeback Joe Montana, The Comeback Kid
I hate to be the one to point it out, but Joe Montana won FOUR SBs, not three! (SB XVI, SB XIX, SB XXIII and SB XXIV) He won the MVP in THREE SBs. Joe NEVER threw an interception during ANY SB, EVER!
Some of the younger generation who never saw Joe play simply look at statistics and argue about who was better, for the vast majority of those of us who lived through the Monana Legend, there is no discussion possible. For those who have witnessed Joe step up to the line with that easy smile on his face at his own 20 yard line with 1:20 left in a Conference Championship with the 49ers trailing, then move them down the field and score the game winner as easily as you or I walking to the front door........
Cris Collinsworth a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals who lost twice in the SB to Montana may have said it best:
"I don't want to call him a god, .......but he's not human either."
(Yeah, absolutely, Greatest QB Ever, without doubt.)

I would consider Joe Montana one of the greatest of all time. It is very difficult to label someone as the greatest. One thing I will say about Montana is that if you had to go 80 yards with no timeouts to win the game then Montana would be the man. He could perform a two minute drill with the best of them and the man had ice water in his veins.
I am not a fan of Marino because it seemed he didn't want a running game around him because he just wanted to put the ball in the air. Also, a lot of his stats were padded because Miami was out of the game and the defenses were playing soft.
You could make an agrument for Bradshaw, Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr and maybe Elway to add to this list.
Today's stars are Brady and Peyton. You have to give Brady his due because he isn't flashy but he gets the job done.

He certainly is up there. On pure leadership so far as championships go, one might argue Bart Starr, Tom Brady, John Elway, or Terry Bradshaw.
Montana had was a fantastic supporting cast with the likes of Jerry Rice, Roger Craig and Dwight Clark to name a few. One thing all three of those players shared was, compared to today's players, a lack of ego that likely helped Montana keep the team focused.
Bart Starr...*shrug*...I'm too young and only remember him as coach of the Packers in the 80s, so I am no expert. He did lead the Packers to numerous NFL Championships and the first two Super Bowls.
Brady, unlike Montana, has been able to deal with a more prima donna attitude from his supporting cast and won 3 of 4 finals. I don't think he's done, either.
Elway won the Super Bowl the last two years he played, but he also led a very mediocre Bronco team to three other appearances in the 80s. Elway may never have the passing stats that Marino or Montana have, but he brought about a new generation of mobility for quarterbacks.
Bradshaw won 4 in 6 years with the Steelers in the 70s. Like Montana, he was surrounded by a very humble offensive cast. Bradshaw also won two MVPs in those games, as I recall.
Another couple of names to throw into the mix...Troy Aikman did lead the Cowboys to 3 of 4 Super Bowls in the 90s. Jim Kelly, like Marino, never won but did lead the Bills to four consecutive final appearances. Like Kelly and Marino, Fran Tarkenton never won either but did get the Vikings there a few times in the 70s.
This is one of those arguments no one would ever win as, unless you simply go with stats and award it to Marino, its all perspective. I don't know that I could choose just one.

In football (just like other sports) the name of the game is winning championships. IN the NFL it's the quest for the ring as the winner of the Super Bowl.
I am aware that the outrageous contracts of today's NFL player's make it hard for its' players to actually care solely about winning championships, but that's what the ONLY GOAL is. That was a belief held by the man who's name is on the NFL"s championship trophy...
SO, that should be the only measuring stick any quarterback is ever held up to:
So here are the rankings in order:
Tied #1 - Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana

I cannot say one is greater then the other. He was a great QB but it is hard to honestly compare all the great ones. Winning Championships is not the only way to tell if someone was great at what they do. It is a team sport and one man does not win a championship. Does not winning a championship make Barry Sander not a great running back? If champions ships are the mark then Trent Dilfer was better then Dan Marino....I don't of many people who would say that.

Several weeks ago Terry Bradshaw got really annoyed over the fact that a quarterback who didn't call his own plays could be considered the greatest qb ever and I totally agree with him. Because of that , Johnny Unitas is the greatest qb ever.

He was for his time. Not anymore. We have others today that we admire more. It is like Marino, he was an Excellent QB in that he broke all kinds of records, but he never won the big stage. Does that make he one of the greatest? In my opinion NO!
