I need to open my Dell Dimension 4600 to replace the dvd drive. What tools might I need, and what is the best way (least intrusive) to get the case open? My new drive came w/ a connector cable. should I use this or can I just reuse the old one?
Thanks

Below is a link to the users manual on the dell web site. It shows how to open the case an access the DVD drive area and replace or install a second DVD. You will need a med size phillips head screwdriver, perhaps a med size standard screwdriver to help depress tabs etc. It's a pretty straight forward job just make sure you disconnect all devices from the box, and unplug it to avoid static shock.

Go to support.dell.com and enter either the express service code or the model number (dimension 4600) of your PC. They will have a service manual you can download or view on line that will take you step by step with picture through doing it.

But being a Dell desktop, normally the drives are held in by plastic rails. You simple sqeeze them together and pull out the drive. No tools are needed (or at most a phillips screwdriver).

If you are replacing the existing drive, you can reuse the current cable. Normally the extra cable they give you is for adding an additional drive.

In general, all you need is a standad Phillips driver.

However, it's usually best to get a computer toolkit in case you need more. Usually available in CompUSA and such for under $20.

Each case design is different, some may even have tool-less openings, esp. name brand cases. Consult your manual for details.

It is best to use the new cable as you know that is designed for your new drive.
