I think it's more a matter of personal preference. I have used IE for 10+ years, and have no problem with it, only with IE7, which was rushed to production before the bugs were out. I tried it, didn't like it, got rid of it and am happy with IE6. A few years ago I tried Firefox and didn't like it, but maybe it's time to try it again. A little experiment won't hurt anything.
As far as the junk from IE is concerned, I clean up my computer on a daily basis, so it doesn't collect. I do wish Yahoo would stop pushing IE7, but they certainly aren't going to listen to me, so I ignore it.
Thanks for a good question, and thanks to all the posters with good information on FireFox.

The main reason people (like myself) prefer to use Firefox over IE is that Firefox is more secure. Since it was designed after many of the holes and bugs were found in IE, it does not have those bugs. This makes it harder to hack into Firefox. Firefix also does not run activex (which IE has also dropped from IE7), which makes it harder for spywares and other malwares to install on your PC.
Also, since only about 10% of people are using Firefox rather than IE, the virus writers have not bothered (yet) to write anything tha attacks Firefox. So it has been much more free of viruses.
Plus, Firefox has the "tab" feature and some other nice things that were not available in IE until IE7.
Will you see a lot of difference on the screen? Nope. Firefox worked very hard to assure that things will look and work the same on Firefox as the do on IE. The differences are behind the scene, with Firefox's security.

IE7 users have many complaints. Just look around Yahoo Answers. Maybe because you haven't "upgraded", you haven't had any problems. It seems that the "upgrade" is aggravating.
Did you try the tab feature of Firefox? Instead of opening many IE windows, you can open one window with numerous tabs. Opera users will argue that Opera did it first, but I'm not an Opera-hater, just a Firefox user.
As to the claims that Firefox is more secure by giving the user more control as to whether scripts are allowed to run, I wouldn't know the difference, to be fair. But among the many add-ons available for you to customize your Firefox, is the AdBlock add-on. I can block any image or ad, making the appearance of web pages cleaner and less "busy". Add-ons (extensions) make surfing easier and more enjoyable.
The moaning and groaning is about IE7, not Firefox!

Truly IE really sucks, groaning and moaning and all that. You are being prejudiced in favour of IE just because you have been using it for 9 years(I really dont know how u lived with it!!)You are not willing to make a change and from the way you speak of Firefox, it looks like you are not completely informed of the features of Firefox.
If u want the truth in a straight way of which browser is the best, visit
