How about we get rid of surnames alltogether. We have a social security number to tell one from another, so the surname is obsolete.

But that is like saying when two people get married the woman keeps her maiden name? Then how do we trace our roots? Both family lines are still preserved in that should a woman want to trace her family back from her mothers side she can do.

like every good idea it has many flaws, like the possibility of incest between offspring with different surnames.
the best would be an identification number that is singular but also identifies all family relations and maybe more, a sort of a catalog number for people.

in this day and age we have choices, we can keep our own names... and in many cultures thats what happens, for example in greece, the women have to keep their SURNAME (little tip!!) or was that meant to be and ironic joke sir name??
