My partner works for a company as a landscape gardener & he is very good at what he does & really enjoys the work. However, he doesn't enjoy working for someone else & would really love to set up on his own. Can anyone suggest how he should go about this without risking too much? He currently works full time & would not be able to just quit his job in the hope his business would be a success. Anyone got any ideas how he could get his business off to a start? What kinds of things should he do to promote his business & build a customer base? There must be people out there who can help with this or have maybe doen this themselves already. He is a very hard worker & would put 110% in to his own business but we just need some ideas on how to get started withput risking too much as we have a baby on the way as well. Please help.

he can try to do small projects first on the weekends. and start building his customer base from there by asking his "weekend" customers to spread the word around. he can also give them discounts on future projects if they can refer him to new clients.

has he been able to save up to invest in his own tools yet?

you can email family and friends first to help you spread the word. you can also print up a flyer and have it photocopied and put it in people's mailboxes.

if he does work on his own, he may need to register with a local government office for business permits and such. try asking around if there is a local business club where he might be able to get free mentoring and advice.

you'll also need to look into paying business tax. do you know any good accountants?

Its very risky to set up a business like landscaping without having financial backing and being prepared to take some risks. My brother gave up his job as a landscape gardener to start his own business and he has found it so hard at times. He has been in business about 10 years or more now but the first years were dire. He first began by putting small ad's out in local papers and doing the private jobs in his spare time while still doing his employed work. Every time he completed a job he took photographs of his work to build up his portfolio. When more private work started to come in he had to either go out there on his own or refuse it and stay employed - he chose to go it alone and then the hard times began. He didnt immediately have enough work for a full week at a time - the summers were very good but very long hours where his wife didnt see much of him - the winters were dire and he forever worried about money. He built up a very good client base and had alot of well known clients - but often they are the worst payers and it was time consuming to chase and chase money owed. Many many times he nearly threw the towel in but he carried on - now his family have grown and the pressure is off slightly but to be honest - had it not been for his very hard working partner who earns more then he does and therefore supported them - he wouldnt have made it. I would think very carefully about making that leap totally - try just doing a few private jobs to start xxx

Business is may the best man win!!! If he is good he can take a contract from his employer. this will enable him to stay partly busy until he can get enough on his own. Some customers he is doing may ask him to do side jobs if he is cheaper than the employer. Can he plow snow or do something in winter slow season?? Also need to start having some credit w/supply houses side jobs are a great start.
