Heh - while they look somewhat like elbows, flamingoes legs have backwards joints so that they can tuck their legs up under their bodies during flight. It's a common structure in most avian skeletons.

Yes, they do appear to be that. Really strange looking too I might add. My daughter has a massive and interesting flamingo collection. It is very cool.
