Charles Bannerman of Australia was the first batsman to score a century in Test Cricket. In the first ever test match in the history of cricket played between Australia and England at Melbourne Cricket Ground from 15th to 19th March 1877, Bannerman scored 165 runs in 285 minutes with the help of 18 fours in the first innings. He has scored 69.6 % runs of Australia's first innings total of 245 runs, which is still a record in test cricket.
He was retired hurt.

It was Charles Bannerman for Australia in the very first test match, 15-19 March, 1877.
He made 165 retired hurt, Batting at number 1 in Australia's first innings.
Not only does he have the first ever century, he has Australia's baggygreen cap number 1.
