That's so true....quite an enigma! I always say my dad gets up to turn on the traffic lights......you'd think now that they've retired they would sleep in, but no, it's up at the crack of dawn.....really, really weird...♥

It's usually from "habit" what time you wake up. Most older people grow up with the idea that "the early bird gets the worm". It's a matter of being ready to get up and get things done. The older you get, the less sleep you need, depending on your daily activities. Your sub-conscious mind is your clock.

i know waht you mean my gran does the same thing. Its something that goes back a long way for many people of thier generation.

They would get up early do housework, cook look after lil bros and sisters and the men would go out to work. They did it form a young age and it has been installed in them. some think its crazy but when you wake up in the morning and get all you need to do out of the way, it feels great coz you have the rest of the day to yourself.

Its because theyve spent most of their lives getting up at that time and earlier, to go to work, 5am probably seems like a sleep in for him i bet.....older folks need less sleep than younger folk too, and so sleep less.

Partly it's because what they're used to.

Partly it's because they go to bed early.

Partly it's because they probably have to get up to go to the bathroom.

But mostly it's because you need less sleep as you get older (unless you're an invalid) and it's more effective in more frequent, but shorter, bits (like naps.)

A lot of us do. That is so weird. Maybe it's because we know the value of a good nights sleep and acutally do it. Or, it could be that the ole bones start creaking and it wakes us up. Or, in my case I gotta pee. Always gotta pee!
