"98" mondeo, there are two ways to fix this,
1) is to use a black sealant
2) use the modified rubber buytle strips

both from Ford

Replace the gasket (rubber) molding of your boot (trunk) of you Ford Mondeo (Ford Contour of USA).

If the rear light is leaking, replace the rear light.

This is a common problem with the mondeo is it petrol or diesel?Reminds me of a time 1964 It was Ollie reed, binkie and myself We had just picked up the new Bentley. Driving down the kings road.We had been out Drinking for the last 3 days ( that's when it was compulsory to drink and drive) Ollie spotted these two rather stunning bits of tottie. Now we had a problem what to do with binkie, quick as a flash (inspired) I lent across and opened the passenger door and pushed binkie out( we were only doing seventy backwards at the time so it was quite safe to do so)What a night Ollie and I had, but that's another story for another time.Binkie though it was very funny when he came out of his coma 3 months later.Sold the Bentley soon after as it had a tendency to veer off into bus que's when I had been drinking with Ollie.Plus the ash tray was full.Hope this has answered your question

Great question!

I have a Megan, and have the same problem. My boot has filled up with water (literally its like my own transportable pond back there), ruining my spare wheel and my car inside smells like a river. It even condensates on my front window!

I have to let the thing dry out, and have re-seated the whole light connection panel in the hope it will make a better seal.

If you dont get this working perhaps we can do a double act, and get fish leaping from your boot to mine, we could charge people to watch!!
