According to wikipedia:

In 1838, the British scientist Charles Wheatstone published an explanation of binocular vision (binocular depth perception) which had led him to make stereoscopic drawings and to construct a stereoscope based on a combination of mirrors to allow a person to see 3D images from two 2D pictures (stereograms).

I think he just got really bored one day! LOL

And yes I can see them quite easily - none of this putting it to your nose and moving it away stuff!

The link below gives a few more details about them plus a really cool animated one!

I had trouble seeing the first one but when I got the hang of it I could see them all without any trouble. The trick is for your eyes to focus at a distance, not close up on the pictureand the 3D image just sort of swims out at you - weird

It is a simple principle, two images of a scene from very slightly different angles are places inside a pattern. For a further explantion and history see link

yeah, they're ace.

They're made by computer, first they render a 3d image and then cover it with a stupid pattern..

Who knows how the hell they came up with the idea!! "hey wouldn't it be cool to invent something that pisses people off and amazes all the rest!"

I can't see them either.

I read somewhere that it's all down to your brain. If you have an scientific, analytical mind then you can't see them, or at least have trouble seeing them. If you have an artistic/creative mind then you tend to see them easily.

I'm an engineer by trade, and have never been into artistic stuff myself, so that explains it.

I've never been able to see anything in magic eye pictures no matter how hard I concentrate. They annoy me so much.
