In England you don't one. When I married my late wife I did not have to take anything with me but she had to take her divorce papers.
Of course whe I re-marry I assume I'll have to take the death certificate as my proof that I'm single again.

Most places don't require you to bring any documentation to prove you are single in order to obtain a marriage license. Most places only require a driver's license/Military ID card/State issued ID card/passport/birth certificate (most places rather have identification with a picture however). You only need to bring one form on ID. However, if you are not sure if what you have will work, you might want to bring more than one form of ID or find the website of the county/city you are getting your marriage license in and they most likely will have everything you need to bring. But, a lot of places, but not all, require you to bring documentation if you have been previously divorced or widowed. If you have been divorced, it would be a good idea to bring a copy of the divorce papers or if you have been widowed, a copy of their death certificate. Also, make sure you bring the money to pay for the marriage license. In Kentucky, it costs $34.50, but I am not sure in other places, probably around the same amount...remember most places will only take cash or check for the payment of the marriage license. Remember, most marriage licenses have be to used within 30 days of their issue date. And congratulations on getting engaged to be married!

Alright mate. I'm Irish & before I got married I had to get a letter from the church in all the parishes that I had lived in (5 as it turned out!!) to prove that I had not been married in that parish.
The Roman Catholic church will not allow a married person to remarry in their church unless their spouse is deceased & this, apparantly, is their way of proving it.
Best of luck with it & with the marriage.

sometimes this can be obtained from the church that did your baptism. In the Greek Orthodox church, when yu want to marry, this single certificate has to be given to the priest otherwise he won't marry you.

You dont need proof to prove that you are single, your word is enough if he/she does not believe you do you really think its going to work?. he/she can check with the registry to see if you are married but not if your single. hope this helps godd luck in whatever you choose.

There is no such thing. If you are divorced you need a 'Divorce Decree' (provided by the court where you got divorced) as proof you are single - this is what they are looking for.

All you have to show is your birth certificate. The only time you have to have a certificate to show you are single is in the case of divorcee's who have to show the decree absolute. xx
