I had Insomnia about 10 years ago, after visiting a lot of Doctors and taking different medicines a friend took me to a Homeopath and she prescribed a Herb called PASSIFLORA INCARNATA in Q potency. I took it for three days 20 drop doses in some water every 6 hours ,never needed any aid to go to sleep after it. Wonderfully calming effect it had on me and its totally non addictive. Now whenever I am too uptight to go to sleep I take 20 drops in warm water and Zzzzzz :-) I go to peaceful sleep and wake up feeling fresh and pacified.
Best of Luck

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Actually warm milk and (a small amount of) honey to taste does help with sleep. The fact is, milk contains tryptophan (the same chemical in turkey that makes people sleepy). Your body converts the tryptophan into seritonin, then converts that seritonin into melitonin, which makes you sleepy.
Also, try taking a warm bath or shower about 90 minutes before bed. Your body naturally has a cooling down process at night, signaling that it is time for it to rest. Taking a warm bath 90 minutes before bed, helps speed this process up, if your natural process it out of whack or you just need to kick start it. try a lavender body wash too (one with actual lavendar oil or lavendar extract in it.). As lavendar is naturally relaxing and helps insomnia.
Also, don't have anything with caffene after 3pm. And at night, stay away from sugary, or heavy carb snacks if you are hungry. Either eat a light carb snack or something dairy. As it is easier for your digestive system to process and won't keep you up (or wake you up in the middle of the night).
Try to keep your room quiet and dark.
Try to go to bed at the same time every night to get your body used to the same cycle. This is important.
Don't do anything in bed other than sleep (or have sex.) You're brain and body need to get used to the idea that your bed is for sleep. So that when you lie down in bed, that's what your brain and body will do...sleep. This is one of the many steps in "Sleep Hygene".

Try an oil burner - then use some pure essential oil of lavender / chamomile roman or vetivert or a blend of all 3. Depending on the size of your room around 6 drops total will help.
A bath before bed using these oils blended with a vegetable oil will also help & to support this try chamomile & lavender tea before bed.

i don't have any faith in natural drugs anymore. in my experience they overcharge you and the dosages are too low. or you have to use it continuously. very expensive, at least here in south africa.
i've tried a herbal remedy (in pill form) with camomile, valerian and passionflower in it at double the stated dosage and it didn't work. i've tried melatonin, did'nt work either and it;s too expensive to keep on taking it month after month to "give it a chance".
Diphenhydramine works for me though - not herbal i know, but cheap and OTC. probably still need to double the dosage though.
my insomnia is starting again also, this time i decided, i'm not gonna beat myself up, rolling around restless etc. instead i'll use the extra time (reading, tv whatever). the idea is to wait till my body finally gives in and let me go to sleep. the important (and very very hard) part is to get up normal time next morning. keep on doing this. eventually the stupid sandman should come on time for the sleep appointment. well thats what i hope. and i do believe exercise is also a great help.

valarian is a natural seditve, but it smells terrible
chamomile is a natural seditive that you can drink in a plesant tea
streaching, or light excercise also will help you sleep better (excercise at least an hour before you go to bed...) (streach just before bed)
