Most of the answers you have received are pretty correct. Corruption is the main problem there and in many other underdeloped nations. Nigeria was forced into being one country by the western powers who wanted it to be one place so that it would be easier to deal with to get the oil out of there. There are so many different cultural groups in that "country" and so many different languages present it is almost impossible for them all to get along together. Tribal wars still rage there, and Ritual killings are a part of life, even in Lagos. Western "aid" has worsened the problems of course, because of the mistaken belief present in the west that throwing money at a problem will make it go away. Wrong. I work there, and have for the last 16 years. It has not changed a heck of a lot in the time I have been there. The only visible change is that most people now have mobile phones, but that is only a refelction of their desire for telecommunications which their corrupt government is unable to provide.

Because of underdevelopment and illiteracy which have combined to make the leaders get away with all sorts of crimes against the people. The people do not know their rights as granted in the constitution. They don't even know what to legitimately expect from the leaders. These corrupt leaders therefore get away with almost anything due to the ignorance of the populace. The middle class that should have been the saving grace always stands on the sideline, waiting for their turn to empty the treasury. They therefore keep mum instead of exposing corruption or bad leadership.

Hello

Read the book ( The State of Africa ) All the answers are in it. From colonialism to corruption to tribal conflict.

I work in the aid game. Its a shame but until they have conflicts and corruption sorted it may never end. The donating countries are helping in many ways but politics and gain from other countries always gets in the way.

Give the fishing rod not the fish !!

Corruption! "Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, has accused past Nigerian leaders of stealing $500 billion donors’ assistance from Western countries to Nigeria since independence."

$500 billion is six times more money than Europe needed to rebuild their countries via the Marshall Plan after World War 2.

You know what I'm sick of, I'm sick of this country taking money from here and sending it to every other country to help. There is no other country that helps us it's always us giving to someplace else. What about the people that were born here I don't care what color they are. WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN FIRST. Take a look at any big city and look at the amount of homeless we have and what about veterans they went to fight for this country and came home VA hospitals that can't give them the help they need. Stop complaining about blacks in this country because the majority were born here and start bitching about the WHITE WALL STREET KNOW IT ALLS that got us into the situation along with the last two WHITE presidents we had.

2)Large and small companies who strip Africa of it's resources and don't put the money back inot the country
EX: Nigeria-oil (ex:Shell)
Diamonds (ex:Debeers) Congo-Cobalt (We use this in cell phones, computers, video games (Dell, Gateway, Sony)
3)Division amongst tribes-which has led to genocide, etc

Scrumble for power, selfishness amoung the leaders, corruption, greed, tribalism, lack of knowledge all this have lead to disagreements hence tribal war. With war no country can develope since there is no time and for development. hence poverty, diseases, sickness, hunger. This countries are one of the richest but if only good leaders could be found to guide, lead and unite all this people development will be a word to be heard but never done.

A major reason is the lack of fair trade. The EU's subvention for farmers pushes down the prices and Africans can't compete with that.
Ironically, even the food aid from the West keeps agriculture down, thus creating poverty and consequently famine.

And yes, other main factors are corruption, because the money doesn't go where it should, the poor living conditions (health, wars, lack of infrastructure, pollution)... etc.

Corruption. Civil unrest. The west does'nt give a damn. If you've seen Hotel Rwanda, you'll know about how the rest of the world let the genocide happen.
