Is science on the right track in tracking thought and synaptic pathways?

Does science really understand that just because certain areas of the brain "light up" with their tests, that said "activity" is 100% responsible for the "stimulus/reaction/behavior" they are attempting to map?

I thin k it is the only way to heal mental diseases to know how brain works. if you do not know how a device works ,how can you repair?
