Well, there is Hum Saath-Saath hain where the mother is the most important character because she's the cause of all the tension in the film. It stars Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, Mohnish Bahl, Mahesh Thakur, Neelam, etc.
Directed and written by Sooraj R. Barjatya. The music was done by Ram Laxman.

A mother is worried after her husband retires because he's leaving the business in the care of his eldest son. His second son has just returned from the US in a master's program and his third son is kind of a layabout. The oldest son is by his first wife who has since died. She arranges for the oldest son to travel to another area and build a factory. While he's gone taking the youngest son she tries to give her oldest son the best chair/desk in the factory, the best bedroom and set him up in the place of his elder brother. He entirely refuses.

I wasn't aware that there were any indian films where the mother doesn't have a prominant role. I haven't seen any like that and I've seen quite a few.
