Manna, this is a very important question! I agree with so many of the comments that state that mentally ill people are released due to several facors. First of all, lack of staffing and budget cuts in mental hospitals require that only the most critical cases must be kept in the hospital (can you imagine what the worst cases must be like, then?).

Secondly, medications such as antidepressents will fool a patient. Because the medications help them, the patient feels normal and fools themselves into believing they no longer need the medication.

Thirdly, lack of money also affects the mentally ill population. Medications are expensive and if you don't have the money for medication, you may no longer be taking the medication, or you may not be able to remain hospitalized due to the cost of the hospital stay.

Fourth, if a person voluntarily signs themselves into a mental hospital admission (which happens in most cases), a patient can choose to refuse medical or mental health care, allowing them to be released.

Finally, when budget cuts go into effect, there may be cuts to the mentally ill population.

the facts are mentally Ill should be hospitalized until well if ever they get well. the problem lyes once released they stop their medication that help them stay semi normal. if someone was let off free for throwing a child or anyone for that fact i find it hard to believe that person would be allowed no punishment. rather jail or back to the mental ward. money has nothing to do with murder unless your rich. then if your rich sometimes not all times you can hire a lawyer known to get someone off. which is wrong but look at the OJ Simpson case? not enough evidence to convict he was guilty. life is not fair. after a person is in jail or a mental ward if let loose they had to have been found well enough to be released by the institution. and jail? you do your time and you get released. sometimes as you stated the crazy people never go for help. the sane ones do. i know from working in the facility's. so if your Leary stay away and avoid the loony tunes.no one take offense on the loony tune word. the loony tune refers to those that never get help.

The issue always comes down to money. State budgets get cut and the first thing that gets cut is social services. I live in Texas and two years ago our state legislature cut the budget for social services including Child protective Services. Then two young children died in San Antonio, both starved to death by their own family. That same year our governor held 4 special sessions of the legislature to tackle the all important task of redistricting to increase the size of Republican districts. This costs 500,000 dollars for each time yet there was no money for CPS. After those two children died lo and behold the state found the money to increase CPS's budget so they could rehire the many people who were laid off. I don't know what it is like in your state..but it comes down to priorities and people with mental illness are not a big political base therefor they are not important to politicians.

The law says that someone can only be held in a mental hospital against their will if they are a danger to themselves or others. A strict interpretation of this will take it as meaning a direct danger (not from faling to take care of themselves) and pretty much let them out when they are not well at all - because its the law.

The Government is the one to blame. They decided that the rights of the mentally ill were more important than the rights of the rest of us. But it really hurts many mentally ill people who end up in homeless shelters all over our country. Its a disgrace that we dont take better care of our ill people.

My thoughts are that the mental hospitals, especially the state run hospitals, do so because it is expensive for the government to keep the mental patient for any longer than what they deem to be absolutely necessary.
