Years ago the ends of the axles, or hub (the bit that the wheel bolts on to) were open to the weather and dirt from the, in those days, not very good roads, a cover was introduced which snapped over the wheel adjacent to the wheel nut to keep the dirt out these became known as `Hub Caps` these caps have now been superseded by plastic plates which fit over the complete wheel, Hub caps can still be seen on the old `Mini` and `Morris Minor`. Posher motors had `Knave Plates` which did the same thing.

hub caps (British English) UK
wheel covers (American English) USA
A hub cap is a plastic cover that is put on the wheel. They have only one color (I think, maybe not), that is silver plastic color. These can be slide on the wheel like the Toyota Corolla or any older American Car, or bolt on like the Honda Civic. They are valuable, they cost $100 or more when they are brand new.
To remove the hub cap on the Honda Civic, you have to remove the lug nuts, then remove the hub cap. That's why they have "wheel locks" sold at the dealership (dealer).
Good thing they don't steal the wheel and tires (tyres).

People who are cheap buy cars that dont have alloy wheals...instead they get those horrible naff wheels that have a cap (hub cap) that clips onto the outside of the wheel in a vein attempt to make their car look nicer than it really is.....but as liverpuddlians never had taste in the first place they think that hubcaps are worth stealing! Poor souls!

Hub caps is the old fashioned name for wheel trims. Ive got a set on my cortina mk1,though then they just covered the centre,(wheel nuts), they were made of metal, now there made of plastic and cover up to rim edge. Because the old ones were made of metal and chromed,I guess people said they would get stolen because they were worth money.

Hub caps are wheel covers on a car, and no different to any other part of the U.K if you want them to go missing.

Its the bit of plastic that covers the hub (the wheel) on a car. There's either 'Alloys' - where the wheel is all one thing made out of alloy, or hub caps - which is just a steel wheel with a plastic hub covering it.
