Keeping it on when unnecessary is a waste of energy, and it will lessen the life of the PC.

Its certainly not "bad" to keep the computer on all the time, as long as there's a goof reason for doing so. I, for one, take part voluntarily in distributed computing projects so I leave my PC on at night.

There are a few problems with letting it run all day long:
- The power bill isn't going to make you smile.
- The room becomes hotter, more so in summer.
- If your PC isn't ventilated properly, there's a good chance something's gonna blow up.

But as with all devices, switching it on and off regularly wears it down, thereby reducing its lifetime. There was a page somewhere on the net that explained that but I'm too lazy to google around for it ;D

Bottomline: if its just lying idle there doing nothing, turn it off.

Hope this helps.

Not really!

Companies keep their servers up for years without a single reboot!

In fact, chances for some computer component to fail is higher when the computer powers on or off.

The only concern is the electricity but modern computers have some power saving features that help.

Many people leave their computers on all the time and it seems to do no harm to the computer but the computer consumes the electricity of a 200 watt light bulb so a good reason to close it down would be to save on electricity.

There's nothing wrong with leaving it on all the time. I leave our main computer plus our 2 file servers on all the time unless we go out of town. I would suggest he get a battery backup though because it will help regulate the voltage going into the machine and also help prevent damage in the event of a lightening strike.

All it does is run the power bill up. So if he doesn't mind wasting energy, then let him keep doing it. It doesn't harm the computer but I would turn it off during a thunder storm just in case.

Keeping the PC on all the time is benefecial for the life of the hard disk. It is recommended. Every reboot and especially shutting and restarting of the PC lessens the life of the Hard Disc.

I have two family members who keep it on 24/7 and both of them need new cooling fans. If you leave a fan running 24/7 it will wear out sooner.

I got a business PC that has been on for 7 years. Turning one one and off is bad for it. Heating up and cooling down with the on and off thing is hard on it.

Dont worry about it until there is sufficient electricity.

My extra PC has been switched on for nearly 3 years now. So, there need not be any problems with it unless you have to pay for the electricity.
