tough one.
Trying to establish an act is difficult.
Get an agent or manager with contacts is best - contact them & ask them to see you gigging. They'll take you on if you have talent.
Alternatively send a demo tape or CD to record companies like EMI etc. You'll find the addresses on the web, direct them to A&R (artist & repertoire) departments.
It's almost impossiible.
I saw this guy Howard Moss playing in the Summer - he was brilliant (can't think of anyone who even comes close) & yet he isn't signed as far as I can tell. David Gray was dropped by two major labels & had most sales releasing material on his own.
Gig & invite people is best.
Agreed X factor is awful - louis walsh for example does the manufactured acts thing & what a lot of rubbish he has made us suffer by promoting the acts he controls - he exploits the kids too. I don't like any of those programmes.

Enter the one of the following song contests:
The John Lennon Song Contest AND/OR
I Write The Songs

Every few months I Write the Songs has a contest based on a genre or style of music. They are different than other contests because whether you win or not they will send a critique of your song (music, lyrics, arrangement, marketability, etc...) and real advice. I have entered several times and though I have never won I have gained experience and gotten honest, sometimes brutal, opinions.
The John Lennon Contest is also a great way to get your music heard by professionals though they will not send any correspondence if you do not win.
I wish you the best of luck on your band. Keep playing no matter what anyone says!

Send it to me, i'll process it quicker than any music producer.

I gurantee to put it in the bin on the same day it arrives, whereas they might take a week or so !

Bands rarely ( that it to say - show me a band thats been discovered by sending in a tape ? ) get any deal or success this way. You need to get on the circuit, build a name at grass roots level, and them get with a producer who can influence studios and distributors.

You need tyo present yourself in the best light at all times, not submit an "audition using a mobile phone"...you were joking, right ?

Your audition tape is valuable, don't sent it to everyone, you need to target people you are going to be sucessful with. Sending a tape out randomly is like mass CV distribution, when did that ever result in the best deal for a job ?

This comes in three stages....

Phase 1 : Firstly convert to mp3. This you can e-mail and it will give you free distribution. Send it to everybody you can think of in the music business. You might only have one in a million chance of success, but if you send out a ten thousand e-mails , your chances have been reduced to one in a hundred and people will talk if your material is any good.

Phase 2 : In the event of getting a response, make sure you send a complete package in hard to copy to the interested party, complete with good quality photos, biography, band history, set list, ambitions/aspirations and CD with three or four tracks on it.

Phase 3 : Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

local bars that play live music is a good place to start. Make a video and publish it on youtube.com. put your demo 'tape' on myspace.com

Head for the big time. Try sony bmg, island records. Or simon cowell(he he). Try your local radio station, see how it goes then send it nation wide. just go for it, send it everywhere and give yourself more options.
