So I have an invitation for a second round interview after a phone interview. I have to respond and I was wondering if it is okay to ask it the company would reimburse for travel. The company is relatively new.

Absolutely it's proper. If the company is asking you back for a second interview then they are obviously interested to some degree. Did they pay for the first go-round? How far do you have to travel?

The best way to go about it if you are uncomfortable is to subtly mention it in conversation when getting details about when and where the interview will take place. Or just ask plain and simple. A reputable company will understand and not take issue with a request regarding paying for interviews. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Well I think it all depends on the strength of the both parties involved that is between you and the company. Example if they are really interested in hiring you. I know some companies will do this due to the fact that they are `head hunting` looking for a particular person (manager/ceo) and they will go through all extents to convince the selected canidate to move to the job they are offering.
So I think if you fall along these lines then it it is possible to for you to ask for travel reimbursment.

well, if you're a top-tier big shot in the industry, then you should be able to afford travel, and requesting reimbursement would seem very pompous, so the answer would be no.

However, if you're not a top tier big-shot... then you should consider yourself lucky that they called you for a second interview... in which case the answer would be no.

Hope that clarifies things. :)

That would not be a good idea, especially if you want the job.
