stop when you have used 50 baubles and see how much greenness you can see. if the greenness is very noticeable add 15 more babubles. repeat until you think the tree is suitably covered. if you are not sure, grab a neighbour and ask them what it looks like from the outside.

You definately stop if it starts to fall over.
Personally I think trees have more impact when they are underdressed rather than overdressed. For example my 3ft tree will have a string of lights, 20 small baubles and a star a the top.

I never know when to stop. We always buy the biggest we can and, like you say, at the end you can't see any foliage. I have also had a tree fall over, but each year buy more stuff to put on it.

When it starts to look tacky, that's when you stop decorating the Christmas tree.

in several ways " less is more " as I prefer to have fewer ornaments especially on a fiber - optics tree. the more ornaments there are the more cluttered the tree looks. an elegant look is what most people strive for.

Stop when your heart feels content with what you have on your tree.. so what if it's lop-sided because there is 100 pounds of ornaments :) It's your tree and that's all that matters.
