Well on the varsity swim team, in a two hour practice we swim round 6000-7000 yards in 2 hours.
Sets will vary, but usually we will do a long set (consisting of 1000 yards, etc. 10x100 on let's say...1:30.
Then we'll do a shorter set, say 8x75's on 1:30.
Then a long one, 3x500 on...7 min.
Then @ the end of practice (last 15 minutes or so) we might play a fierce game of water polo!!!!!!!!!!!!

it depends on what iam traing for. and if it is in pool or open water.
when i train for triatholns it can be up to 3 mile a day over 1 or 2 sessions. when i am resting i will swim between 40 and 60 lengths depending on the gym work i also do on that day.
it is a good idea to do some sessions in pryamids
ie. 2 lengths rest 30 seconds 4 lengths rest 30 seconds 8 lengths rest 30 seconds 16 lengths rest 30 seconds then work down 8 rest 30 4 rest 30 2 rest 30
dont try to over do your sessions as you will feel very teird the next day and that session will suffer and so on until you dont feel like swimming at all build it up slowly then it is only topping it up all the time.

I have just upped my lengths from 60 to 70 in a 25m pool. Takes 45 minutes and I swim 5 times a week. I try and do sets of 10 using one stroke and then switch to another. I can't do the butterfly but I do the other 3. On days when I'm tired I just do whatever stroke is comfortable (which usually means leaving out the backstroke altogether!)

Between 50 and 60 lengths (25 yard or 25 meter pool). When I do open water swimming (ocean or lake) I like to go between 20 to 30 minutes. I do more if I am training for a long distance event (or if I am going to do ocean life guarding), but I mostly train for "sprint distance" triathlons (swim distance of 1/4 to 1/2 mile) so my distances are not that long composed to competitive swimmers.
One more thing, any swim program should be tailored to the event(s) you are training for (or if you just want to be in good shape). Distance is only one component of training. The other has to do with intensity of various swim workouts.

About 3,000 meters everyday. I'm 25. I used to swim 4,000 mts in college, and 7,000 mts in high school on my team. I'm actually planning to quit my job on March to have more time, and get a job that pays less but gives me more to time to swim. I think I have better luck getting a lot of *** with a good swimmers body, than having extra money.

My worksout vary from 2800 yards to about 3500 yards per session depending on what I'm training for and what type of workout we are having that day. I only swim 3 times per week. Oh, it usually takes a little over an hour per session.

Im a swimming instructor and i often get my sqaud to do 2500m on a medium day training. On a stamina training day I ahve them do 5k+ sometimes. But it depends on waht you want to do.
The best for excerising is sprint swimming. So do say 6 lengths sprint (or whatever you cna manage) then take 30 seconds res-1minute and then do another set. Give yourself sets of things (yu feel yourself progressing, rather than just continupus lengths) and make sure you alternate your strokes/drills too.

I swim about 4 km sometimes a bit more depends on what kind of training I'm doing exactly on the day.

~During the beginning of High School Season (4 hour practices) We swim at least 7,000, but typically closer to 10,000.
~Once school starts and we have two hour practices we go down to about 6,000-8,000.
~During club season it varies on what stroke it is. On distance nights we go forever (Wednesday's practice included 5x1000, 1500 warm up and about 2,000 in other sets) Although on sprint of stroke nights we do a lot more drills or sprint, causing less yardage but more improvemet.
