Maybe it's the parents who should be caned. We have gone from one extreme to the other, from over harsh discipline to none at all.
We need to find a middle path were unacceptable behaviour is clearly defined with the certain knowledge that something unpleasant will happen if they do it. ie hard work in an difficult environment. Years of child centred education has produced a generation of soft, weak, useless young adults who are only capable of wining and complaining, getting drunk and fighting and vomiting in the streets. And the boys are just as bad :)

When I was at school we got caned, punched, slapped and thrown against the wall by some teachers. This was in the 1960's.
In one incident 5 boys in their gym kit were throwing snowballs against a wall.
Throwing snowballs was against the rules.
What did they do?
They marched all of us (about 40) in to the hall and caned us all. There was no attempt to find out who the culprits were, not that throwing snowballs against a wall should have been a caneable offence anyway!
The word 'nazi' comes to mind.

Now I am not against discipline, but it has to be administered properly and in a DISCIPLINED manner. There has to be a code. Some, not all, of the teachers were nothing but brutes and this was at a comprehensive school in Leeds. (Allerton Grange.)
So it seems that the pendulum always swings too far. Certainly there is a problem with young brats maturing in to full grown yobs today.
Is it the parents? Partly. Television and movies having a wrong influence? Certainly.
The labour government is certainly part of the problem too. It would require an act of political will to bring it back and I don't think that will happen.
So things will just continue to get worse while we neglect children by failing to correct and discipline them in this manner

No. One thing we do need is a alternative to it. I was caned at school and at times I thought that the person doing was getting pleasure from it. Perhaps if local education authorities appointed a well vetted office up for corporal punishment it may have a affect. However the do gooders will cry human rights.

Yes it should be back...

Although the punnishment should not be done by the teachers.
There should be a new 'Dicipline Department' that purely deals with all aspects of behaviour in school.

I was cained several times at school and sometimes the aggression in the teacher was obvious.

If now as an adult I harm another person, who is responsible?

Me totally?

Or is it a symtom of being cained by my elders when I was young?

If the argument for not caining is true, then it would now not be my fault if I now did harm another person.

The do gooders cannot have it both ways... It does not work!

Bring back caining and bring back respect.

Why not? didnt do us any harm in fact it made children respect the teacher more , the trouble these days is people not being able to punish thier childen the old fashioned way(a clip round the ear or a smack) nerver did me any harm. When i hear how children speak to thier parents these days makes my blood run cold.all respect has gone out the window i feel sorry for teachers We used to look up to our teacher and the police force i only hope one day it will all come back.

Oh yeah. But it should be used sparingly. You don't want a class full of sulking teens with sore bottoms. I wouldn't mind it though during the rush hour, I get to sit down and enjoy my quiet ride home on the bus.

Oh yeah. But something like that is never going to happen is it? We live in a ridiculously PC society where everything is taken to the extreme. It's a shame though.
