Before you spend loads of money on buying new RAM check you Fans are working ok and blow all the dust out of it as this is the most common problem i come across in the IT world.

You may have too many applications trying to run at one time. Especially if your anti virus is doing a scan of your system. Use cntrl, alt, delete and check to see the cpu usage. If its at 100%, then go to process and see what programs are using how much of the cpu.
