I have installed (physically) a dvd/cd burner on my computer ,hooked up all the nessasary cabling and now when I go into my computer and look at hard drives it doesn't show either E drive or the burner,only my C drive. What have I done wrong. I have XP o/s

There is nothing else you need to do. It should have worked.

Try to see if the drive is visible from the bios when you start the system. It might be that there is a conflict with some other device that is sharing the same IDE cable. Try changing it from master to slave or the opposite! (there is a little jumper on the back of the drive for doing this).

Install Nero burning software. Reboot your PC. Open Nero, see if it recognises your DVD/CD burner. It should.
