ok it seems that your environment variables are wrong!

Assuming that you have windows XP, go to control panel, system, advanced and click on environment variables. Then go to the system variables section and alter the Path bit to include c:\windows\system32!
ie %SystemRoot%\system32;

my one for reference is the following (although you might not need all these)

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft DirectX SDK (April 2006)\Utilities\Bin\x86";%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Intel\DMIX;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Teleca Shared;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\BINN

good luck!

Go to the command prompt and type; help ping
(space between words)
This may tell you how to solve the problem.
