I am conducting a small scale project and would appreciate any views which are directed to the subject of ICT and/or teaching in general.

Obviously I will have my own views and am aware of the 'text-book' type of answers but wanted to hear from anyone directly and inderectly involved in teaching ICT, whatever age group is taught.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Having taught all ages from 14-80+ it is vital that you know your subject. Too often I have had to deal with school groups who have not been taught properly because of a lack of knowledge/skills in the teaching staff. There are those in my type of institution (FE College) who teach ICT straight after having completed a course themselves. This is not a sound knowledge of computing, rather it is a knowledge of the course and assessments.
Schools are still suffering from a shortage of good ICT staff, the school I work with have a manager of ICT simply because that person is the only one to have applied for the job. Having worked with them for a number of years I am well aware of their lack of skill.

Too much emphasis is placed on the 'teaching qualification' and not on the subject skills in many areas not just ICT.
I have so much more to say on this, but best leave it at that!

I have been an ICT tutor for nearly 4 years in an Adult Education College. It was something that I had not done before. I had been a postman for 15 years. I got the job because I had the aptitude to relay information to people on their level, bearing in mind a lot had never touched a computer before. I had little confidence initially but now I am full of it. My students are all very friendly. So in a nutshell I think that you need to have a reasonable understanding of the subject, not be afraid to say if you don't know the answer and have a caring calm attitude especially if they get frustrated when the computer or application throws a "Wobbly" like most Microsoft products tend to do from time to time. This gives the students great feelings in the knowledge that "It was not them who caused the problem" - Hope this helps.

Generally a teacher should know their subject, be enthusiastic about their subject and want to pass it on in interesting ways.
