Because after WWII people in England believed that health and education should be free (at point of need) to all!! And a jolly good thing too!!
In the UK we believed in society and in the US they believe in the individual. But Maggie said there was no society and set out to destroy those institutions which supported it.
It's not free though. We pay through income tax and National Insurance contributions and these days if you want good health care you pay for the NHS from your taxes and private health care from what's left over after the Govt has had it's cut.

I'd rather pay private with bupa and have my taxes lowered in the UK after all not everyone is ill all of the time..It might even encourage more people in the UK to get off there backsides and actually get a job and stop faking illnesses just to claim sick, incapacity and other bloody benefits oh don't get me started on this again i came onto polls and surveys for some light entertainment

I believe the fact we (usa) dont have socialized health care also keeps us at the forefront the fact that doctors and scientists can make huge money lends itself to more advances and better care we have the best drs here from all over the world and yes the majority cant afford the care but due to the advancements shared it eventually benefits all and believe me no one is turned away when it comes down to it

We pay more taxes in the UK and these go to funding the NHS. In the US they pay companies money, but don't pay tax for health care.
Theres a big debate about whether health care should become private, after all.. many people are paying twice by paying in their taxes and spending money to go privately with companies like BUPA.
Personally I think its time that the UK had an opt out clause allowing you to reduce your tax if you have private health care.

America doesn't have the NHS.
It not entirely true it is free though. We do pay for it through taxes and National Insurance contributions (those of us who have jobs)

It's free here at the point of use - but it is funded through National Insurance contributions which all working people and their employers have to pay.

It cost a lot nowadays to educate those persons wanting to be Drs. So now Drs have to charge more for their service and the working class and lower have to pay for that doctors schooling. This is one thing that I wish I could change about the U.S.
