It originally referred to certain fundamentalist religion groups. The members would dance or fall to the floor in religious ecstasy while praying during church services. This was a sign that the Holy Spirit had come over them and sometimes is associated with speaking in tongues. Ask this one in the religion section for a better answer.

In some churches, members get "in the Spirit" and shout and sometimes roll around on the floor. Detractors use the term as a perjorative for anyone who has a spiritual compass.

In our old neighborhood we'd see the "Holy Rollers" about every Sunday morning (mostly men) wearing black suits, white shirts and black ties...riding from door to door on their BIKES to preach the word of God (or whatever their religion consisted of). Also they wore backpacks to hold their bible and flyers. When we seen them heading our way we closed all the blinds and didn't answer the door because if they get ya it's takes forever to make them leave!!! hope it helped.....

It usually refers to pentecostal religion. Sometimes we get a little rowdy when we praise and worship.
