John wrote from the heart and said what he believed in. Listen to a lot of the Beatles output now and the songs still stand up as great songs. I'm not stupid enough to believe everything he wrote was world class BUT he did, both with Paul McC and solo, did write some of the best pop songs ever, which I don't think anyone could disagree with. Being shot has given him a different "status" but to call him an over rated scouse songwriter is just wrong.

no he wasn't or isn't? Lennon was a very good song writer & some of his songs will stand the test of time (along with the many he penned with McCartney)
I agree about Bono however, vastly overrated. I find it hard to believe he wrote the half dozen or so decent songs U2 did (With or Without You for example) - someone told me they bought them from an American guy called Pat Harrison but I don't know & I have to assume they are U2's own work.
Bono is a "do as I say not as I do" type & a hypocrit in my book whereas at least with Lennon what you saw was what you got -like it or not.

Not just John Lennon, all of The Beatles. I wasn't around in the 60's, but there are far better bands that them. I completely agree with you, 'god like' status is just not justified. He only wrote a few songs, not saved the world.

And don't even get me started on Bono, all I can say is 'how about dipping into your own pocket, and save the people in poverty in the UK?'

John Lennon had a great voice and wrote some good songs with Paul and in his solo career. John never expected to become a huge star, especially with The Beatles. YOu cant compare John to the crappy Bono. John always wanted to be an artist, and he loved making music. Its mainly Yoko who is trying to make more money off of John since his death.

The point wanst that he did nothing to change the world, the point was that he tried through politcal protests/ stagings and his music. H was a revolutionary, free thinking individual that protested against the constraints of a represive political system (much like the one we have today- however now we dont have artists that are willing to put their beliefs before their self promotion).
So no, I do not believe that he is either over rated or self rightious. He stood up for what he believed in and encouraged others to do the same for the common good of man.
People like yourself encourage the hatred of our fellow man.

No, and i would bet you have been singing a John Lennon song recently with out knowing it.
The Beatles song are Lennon and McCartney, although old hop a long Mills tried recently to get McCartney to change the wording to McCartney/Lennon.
Bono is C**P by the way.

Yeh in the same way Pele was an over rated chump from a 3rd world country.

Yeh right.their both pioneers of their profession.and revolutionised music and footy.

A bad wind up this one!!

I cant believe some of these answers.without The Beatles you wouldnt have all these bands your into nowadays.they were arguably the most influential band ever.they were always developing new ways to make music and creating different styles.it started with Revolver and then the psychedelia of Sgt Pepper's.you lot dont appreciate the roots of music and the history of it.which makes me think that your just a bunch of kids.

You should never forget where music came from and the simple fact is that apart from Elvis it started in Liverpool with The Beatles.

Cheers

Lennon was a talented man who's songs stand the test of time. Some of the best songs have been written by him such as imagine and Merry Xmas war is over.

you have to take it in the context of the 60s and 70s - for that period of time the Beatles were a revolutionary group who changed the sound and the music scene; also Lennon wrote many lyrics that challenged the government and society which, for that time, was quite daring.
Who in the current music scene is as challenging today? I can't think of many since, in today's music, it is acceptable to swear, criticise the government, the president and society ... so it doesn't have the same impact. In the Sixties, however, this was eye-opening stuff. So Lennon deserves to be remembered as a 'god' for his time.

I think people really support what Lennon stood for not just his music. Personally I always like Paul's music better (lyric whie John owned it though) but really he was a good man, he stood for good causes and was unjustly taken from life when he probably could have done some great things for the world. I believe that's what people are truely supporting, he's become an icon becuase right now he's exactly what the world needs and he's not here.
