My nickname in High school was Grace because I wasnt very Graceful. I played softball and would make the plays and get someone out, but it didnt look pretty. I would trip on the way there, or fall on the bag etc. So they just called me Grace, because there was another Sarah on the team. Needless to say, it has kind of stuck. My friends got me a build-a-bear one year for my birthday and they named it Grace. (I am now a Sr. in college and that name was given to me as a sophomore in high school)
But another one of my nicknames that people think is cute is Suzy Q, because my middle name is Sue.
My cousin's nickname was Bear. (I really dont know why; his name is Derek)
Another one of my cousin's nickname is Binky. He got this because as a child he was sick and he would only want his pacifer which they called a "binky". That name has stuck and when anyone calls him Steven (his real name) I have to think for a minute and realize they are talking about Binky because that is what everyone has called him now for 20 years!
Other than that, i do think you have to know someones personality to give them a nickname.

well My nickname used to be crash...after surviving 35 car wrecks (I was only driving in 6 of them) but that changed to Wile after the last bad crash where I rolled 3 times off a 100 ft cliff with no seat belt on and walked away with a broken finger.

As for Kids nick names Eli (Eliasjiah), Tori (Victoria), and Cash for....(no that is his real name)

I found myself a little worried about my first child's name, because it's unusual. I named him IYORI (EYE-YOUR-E). I don't know if your into Japanimation, but you can get some really cool names from them.

Well, I'm short so my Husband calls me "Halfpint" and "Cupcake" all the time.

Um, some of my friends call me "Sunshine" because I'm happy and silly all the time.
