Take time to wind down before going to sleep. Do something mindless and/or calming like reading or listening to music until you feel relaxed. Lavender can help you relax and it's supposed to able to help you sleep - I don't know if it's effective though, since I don't like the scent...

In my opinion, if you're tried many things that don't work, perhaps your insomnia is symptomatic of something else that's troubling your mind or body, or it's just a new life habit that's keeping you awake. Are you experiencing stressful circumstances in your life? Are you on medication for something else? Are you exercising too close to bedtime?

Make a list of the things you do during the day, note what you eat, and anything that troubles you. Show these to your doctor and ask what the matter could be. He/she may be able to make proper recommendations that might not necessarily be sleeping pills.

I had the same problem. What I did was change a few habits to eliminate the possibility of something more serious being the problem. I began waking earlier in the morning, taking far fewer naps, and (most importantly) I eliminated caffeine of any kind (coffee, soft drinks, tea, chocolate, etc.) after 2-4 p.m. I found that I was much more relaxed in the evening and was less prone to watch whatever was on television, watching only specific shows, and also I was more awake in the morning. As a pick-me-up in the afternoon, an apple works just fine. Start there, if you haven't already.

You need to take this seriously and consult a doctor who will analyse your lifestyle, habits, physical condition etc and advise appropriately. General practices to ensure good sleep are good physical activity, avoiding alcohol/caffeine , listening soft music, reading a book, softlights, sleeping pills etc.

try going to sleep earlier with no tv or music and read a book just to calm you down. try drinking some horlicks and taking some nytol!!
make your room well ventilated but warm and use lots of cusions. also make sure that you are sleeping in clean pyjamas and your sheets are clean!

Look up and use MELATONIN! It works! Even though it's technically a pill it's not really a "sleeping pill". It's a substance that the body normally produces itself!

Herbal tablets are good... valerian, hops etc from your health store.
Switch off... try and make your mind a blank, just push all thoughts and worries aside and try to just think of a black screen.
Fight it on its own ground!!! DON'T sleep. get up and watch TV, or write a letter,or paint a picture... do not let it win!!Or write your life story!!

everyone is different when it comes to sleeping habits.... but maybe its that your body and mind are not tired... have you try-ed to actually go for a walk or run.. to get your body tired, or reading a book.... when the body is tired it will rest.... good luck.. chrys:-)
