well, spraying it with a 10% bleach solution (with 90% water) is worth a shot i guess...
try not to touch bleach. make sure you rinse and soap it all out well.
I think some of those old ones just had a funk to them. It's poor design.

Have you cleaned round all the door seals? Use a cotton bud for this or your finger wrapped in a cloth.
The best way I find to clean inside a fridge or freezer and get rid of smells is use a liquid baby bottle sterilising fluid such as Milton but any brand will do the job. Dilute it as the instructions tell you to, clean the inside with s a bicarb solution then wipe over all the the surfaces wit a very clean cloth and the sterilising solution, let it dry thoroughly before closing the door.

If it smells damp it's not working properly..not freezing your food ..you should never be able to smell any food or
bacteria from a good working freezer

turn it off, get it defrosted, bleach it [not with pure bleach, dilute it with water], let it dry for a day or 2 with doors open, wash it with washing-up liquid to clean-up the bleach, spray it with a kitchen anti-bacterial, it should be nice, clean and smell free. And try to keep it that way, after all, that's the place you store your food

There are fridge deodorisers that you can just put in to the freezer - that's probably your best bet.
(I was told that washing it out with spirit vinegar cures this - but I haven't tried it myself. I wouldn't use malt vinegar though!)

I would try unplugging it and leaving the door open for several hours, so that it can rise to room temperature and dry out.

The best way is to wash it using water with white vinegar, if you do not have white one, malt winegar should do the job as well. And it is completely safe for your fridge!
