You really want to think about the demographics for your website and then figure out what established websites have similar demographics. If your website is for a general demographic, then you want to think about which demographic would likely respond most favorably to your ad in order to get the most for the price. If you provide more info about your website content and demographics, then I can offer more info on specific websites to consider. Good luck!

You're going to have to find related sites that you want to advertise on. It depends what you're offering.

The first step would be to do a search on major search engines such as Yahoo and Google for businesses that would like to be associated with you. i.e. if you are selling shoes then you would want to be associated with a clothing store.

You might want to know that text links actually out perform banner adverts by 4 to 1. So don't think banner adverts are the be all and end all of advertising. Text links are also noticed by web crawlers much easier which will help your link popularity and increase your website's rankings.

If you want my opinion rather stick to advertising your URL in web directories and be very active in related forums and Yahoo Q&A (answer questions on the product that you are selling). Always remember to put a link somewhere in the post as this promotes traffic and increases link popularity.

Also, almost all banner advertising spaces you'll pay for unless you have an affiliate program. There are so many affiliate programs out there it will be difficult to distinguish yourself.

In short:
1) Submit URL to web directories
2) Be active in forums and Yahoo Q&A
3) Text links are more effective if the copywriting is good

Remember people buy the newspaper because of the content not because of the adverts. You can apply this same scenario to websites.
