To over simplify things- topsoil is composed of sand clay and silt. The percentages of each are what make up a soil type. Soil maps from the soil conservatiuon service name the different types in a county. You can go to college for years and get all sorts of advanced degrees to fully answer your question if you need more detail.

Sand, silt, loam and clay are the basic soil types. Different names exist for many soils (like top soil) but these are the basic four. Soil is made up of these components.
