Because they need enough water to be able to right themselves if they somehow flip over.

How would it be easier to drown a fish- too little or too much water?
Red-ear sliders use water for hunting, exercise, mating, escaping, and much more. They crave big spaces- the MINIMUM tank for a Red-ear should be 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length just to give it a little of the space it craves.
More water (with basking sites) gives it options. In shallow water, it has to hunt and search in tight spaces and such it would not go near normally. It will drown when it gets trapped in a way that keeps it from reaching the surface.
Some care sites say that water should be only a few inches deep to protect a turtle from drowning. They have it exactly backwards- we need to design tanks with LOTS of room and no places to snag a turtle.

Ha! Have no idea about the sounds, but not eating could be due to many thing, such as incorrect water temperature, or boredom with current food. Turtles like variety. The fish shouldn't bother the turtle unless you didn't properly sterilize them before you threw them in there. Turtle in the wild are pretty hardy, but captive bred (which I HOPE yours is) are more likely to get diseases from outside sources. Call a vet (doesn't have to be local) and just ask them.

A slider cant tip over in deep water, only in shallow water. They dont need help keeping their head above the water, they are expert swimmers.

They need to have an Island or some type of land mass to get completely out of the water to dry themselves off. and sun themselves.
My turtles are kept in a large kiddie pool with an island in the center and their basking lamp above that.

Red eared sliders can easily flip on there backs. And in sallow water they can't get back on. That way the internal organs pres on the lungs and they can't bred. That's why its better to keep them in deeper water.

If there is less water then they feel the need to hide more, therefore they might get themselves stuck. These guys like to swim to get away from things. If they are just crawling in water they do not feel comfortable.
