I must say, the United States didn't have a perfect reputation before Bush became President. There are many blemishes (and craters) on Uncle Sam's face, despite his years. Of course, we are still younger than many nations, so perhaps he isn't as old as depicted...
Of course Bush pissed off other countries by going into Iraq... The stereotype of America is that we are a nation full of fat, greedy, selfish people. Like many here who probably wish they were in Canada, it's thought that Bush went in for the oil, or for some sort of power trip, instead of a policing maneuver.
All I can say is that I hope that doesn't get into the history books unless it's proven... Those 'theories' don't seem very plausible to me, but of course, what I think might not be plausible to those who disagree with me. I mean, I wonder how much oil has been burned since we got into Iraq, or why Bush is letting the Iraqis run the show in their own elections. Of course, people can argue that he's stupid so his plans backfired, but that just sounds like a bunch of hateful, paranoid nonsense to me unless they cut out the 'he's stupid' approach...
Point is, the reputation of America has always been tarnished in one way or another, and by more than one person. I don't doubt that Bush has done things to tarnish it, but I think he's polished it up some, too. People just look at the negative things these days without paying much mind to the positive... Like the women gaining rights in Iraq, the girls going to school... With the next presidency, one can hope we get out of there successfully, without fear of dictators/terrorist groups taking power and again compromising the peace we hope to build there... but there might be a backfire... who knows... It's a pretty risky operation, no doubt.
I don't like the fact that it takes blood to get there... but diplomacy, (especially plain ignoring the problem), does not always work.

Destroyed it. As Americans we need to prove our intelligence to the rest of the world now. We have fallen so far in just a few short years.Other countries always looked at the US as a spoiled rich country (which is a very shallow stereotype) but now we are stupid and warmongers as well.
Maybe it's just a growing pains sort of thing, as most European countries have gotten their colonizing and interfering with another sovereign country stage over with (back when they were the world powers) Most countries have similar blood on their hands, Britain with China and the middle east, most of Europe with Africa, France with Vietnam, Russia with the Eastern Block and Finland, Japan with China and the Philippines...I know we are all familiar with Germany's past transgressions.
All I can say is that it doesn't make me proud that we have started a pointless and uncalled for war. I am ashamed of our actions abroad.
We are such a large country, so very seperate from the rest of the western world that we get caught up in our own lives. Which is a natural thing, Europe is involved with it's own affairs as well. But after September 11th we felt a national unity here in the US. That feeling of country , of a wounded yet strong nation has been tarnished. I don't know what to think about our course, therefore I can't really defend our reputation.
Our president, who the majority of us did not vote for in either election, who would not serve in our last unending colonial power war, is ripping us to shreds.
All I can ask is that people from other countries try not to stereotype and judge us too harshly, as we try to stop this war that we as a people did not want.

he has soiled it, as now we are seen as the bad cop on the block, war mongering and all too ready to destroy the world, we are also seen as the big suker as we let Ssaudi Arabians attack us, 9/11 (highjackers and bin ladden) yet remain their brown nosing buddies!
I was in New Zeland on 911, and came home in 02, after lviing over seas in New Zealand and Australia for 4 years, so I got a real taste of what non AMericans who are our allies think of us, and why
